Meet the Designer: Caroline Castigliano
The Icon of British Luxury Bridal Design
Caroline Castigliano is one of Britain’s most established luxury bridal designers, renowned for her effortless silhouettes, expert corsetry and a modern approach to couture wedding dresses.
For over 35 years, the Caroline Castigliano name has been the choice of discerning brides seeking a gown that feels refined, personal, and beautifully considered. In this conversation, Caroline shares the story behind her brand, her design philosophy, and the details every bride should consider when choosing her wedding dress.
A Vision Born from Design and Movement
Tell us a bit about your brand, Caroline – how was it born, and how has it evolved over the years?
"I started Caroline Castigliano 35 years ago, following five years in the United States with my first company, Survival Kit, where I designed high-performance active sportswear.
That period was an incredible foundation. Designing for major retailers taught me how women want to feel in their clothes: confident, supported, and free to move. When I transitioned into bridalwear, I brought that understanding of 'performance' with me, a wedding dress should be as comfortable as it is breathtaking."

The Roots of British Craftsmanship
Your work is known for its incredible structure. Where did that obsession with fit begin?
"My passion for making clothes began in childhood. My mother taught me to sew when I was very young, and by age ten, I was already crafting my own wardrobe. My best friend and I would visit Liberty of London to buy fabrics, spending our summers draping and making dresses.
Those early days taught me the architecture of a garment, balance, proportion, and fit. These principles remain the DNA of every Caroline Castigliano gown today."

A Legacy of Couture Excellence
How did the brand become the household name it is today?
"I returned to the UK in 1991 and saw a gap in the market for a modern, sophisticated bridal aesthetic. I opened my first bridal boutique in Esher, Surrey, and soon after collaborated with Jasper Conran on a label that became a great success.
Six months later, I launched the first official Caroline Castigliano collection. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of running The Wedding Dress at Harrods and The Designer Bridal Room at Liberty.
Today, while the brand has grown into an international name, our heart remains in the UK. Every gown is a celebration of British bridal design, handcrafted with exceptional fit and modern style."

The Aesthetic: Who is the Castigliano Bride?
Is there a typical Caroline Castigliano bride?
"The Castigliano bride is defined by a sense of effortless style rather than being dominated by passing trends. She seeks a timeless wedding dress that reflects her own confidence and sophistication.

To achieve this, I follow a strict design DNA that ensures every gown
is a masterpiece of British engineering:
-
Architectural Foundations: I believe that without outstanding internal structure, you can never create a truly stunning dress. Our gowns feature expertly crafted corsetry designed to offer unparalleled support and a seamless silhouette.
-
The Finest Fabrics: We use only the most luxurious bridal fabrics from heavyweight silks to delicate laces. The way a fabric catches the light or moves as you walk is what brings a design to life.
-
Couture Craftsmanship: Quality is everything. We employ traditional couture making techniques to ensure that every stitch and finish is flawless.
-
The Power of Simplicity: My philosophy is rooted in minimalist bridal style. I believe clean lines and understated details create the most powerful impact, resulting in a gown that will look as beautiful in fifty years as it does today."

The Experience: Your Bridal Journey
How does the bridal journey work at Caroline Castigliano?
"Our Knightsbridge flagship boutique operates by appointment only. This ensures each bride receives our undivided attention as we work together to realize her vision. To maintain a calm and focused environment, we recommend bringing no more than two trusted guests; we find that a small, intimate group allows the bride’s own voice to remain the clearest.
-
The Initial Consultation:
During your first bridal appointment, your stylist will spend time truly getting to know you, your wedding plans, and your personal style. We always encourage brides to bring a mood board—it’s a wonderful way to communicate the 'feeling' of the day. From there, you will explore a curated selection of gowns that align with your vision, along with a few 'wild card' styles that often surprise and delight. We believe that when a bride finds 'the one,' she should understand exactly why it is perfection.
The Crafting Process:
Ideally, the journey begins approximately one year before the wedding, though we can often accommodate a six-month lead time. Because every Caroline Castigliano gown is handcrafted by highly skilled technicians using traditional British couture techniques, we only accept a limited number of commissions each year. Once our production atelier reaches capacity, we are unable to take further orders. This exclusivity ensures that every gown receives the meticulous care and attention to detail it deserves."

The Art of the Perfect Fit: Bespoke & Customisation
Do you do bespoke? Or can designs be customised?
"Every Caroline Castigliano gown ordered from our Knightsbridge Atelier is created individually for the bride. We don’t just make dresses; we craft a silhouette that is unique to you.
The process begins with a comprehensive set of measurements taken by our Head of Fittings. This is followed by a toile fitting, a mock-up of your gown hand-carved in calico. This stage is vital; it acts as a precise template, allowing us to refine the proportions and ensure the fit is flawless before your chosen fabric is even touched.
Following the toile, you will have up to three specialized fittings in your actual gown. This meticulous journey ensures that by the time you collect your dress, typically one week before your wedding, it feels like a second skin.
At every stage, our goal is to ensure your couture bridal experience is a cherished part of your wedding story. We want you to look back on these appointments as some of the most special moments in the lead-up to your big day.

The Investment: Pricing & Collections

The Main Collection: Our designer wedding dress collections typically range from £5,000 to £10,000. This is a comprehensive service that includes your initial measurements, the hand-crafted toile, and all subsequent fittings to ensure a flawless finish.
Bespoke Services: For brides looking to personalise elements of an existing design or combine features for a unique look, our bespoke bridal service starts from £7,000.
Couture Commissions: For a truly one-of-a-kind masterpiece, our exclusive couture gowns start from £15,000. I personally oversee the entire couture journey - from the initial design sketches through to the final collection - ensuring every detail is a reflection of the bride's ultimate vision."

Expert Advice: Common Bridal Pitfalls
What are some common mistakes you see brides make during their search?
"At the Atelier, our role is to guide you, ensuring you feel confident and informed throughout the process. However, there are several misconceptions we encounter regularly that every bride should understand:
Confusing 'Made to Order' with 'Made to Measure':
These are entirely different processes. A 'Made to Order' gown is produced in a standard size. In contrast, a Made to Measure wedding dress is crafted to your specific body proportions—taking into account height, width, and unique contours.
Misunderstanding Fabric Quality:
A common myth is that 'Satin' is a fibre; it is actually a weave. Many brides are misled into buying synthetic polyesters when they believe they are getting the beauty of natural silk bridal fabrics. Always ask about the fibre content to ensure you are investing in genuine luxury.
The 'Sleeve' Misconception:
Many brides believe sleeves are necessary to slim the arms. In reality, the wrong sleeve can actually draw more attention to the area. Often, a beautifully cut strapless silhouette or a clever neckline provides a much more flattering, elongated line.
Hiding the Budget:
Your investment is the foundation of your search. Be open with your stylist from the very beginning. There is no heartbreak quite like falling in love with a couture gown only to find it sits outside your intended investment range.
Under-Researching Boutiques:
Don't try on everything everywhere. Do your research and only visit luxury bridal boutiques whose aesthetic truly resonates with your personal style. This keeps the experience joyful rather than overwhelming."
Design Vision: Trends vs. Timelessness
Are there any bridal fashion trends you are particularly excited about right now?
"At Caroline Castigliano, we have never been a trend-led brand. Our focus is always on architectural lines that incorporate contemporary elements to maintain a modern, stylish edge. Trends fade, but a wedding photograph should remain a source of pride for decades.
Over the years, our collections have evolved to meet the needs of the modern woman, yet we remain best known for our unique gown construction and impeccable fit. Instead of chasing fleeting fashions, I focus on:
Innovative Textures: I am constantly searching for 'special' fabrics that elevate a gown from beautiful to extraordinary. Whether it’s a unique jacquard or a rare lace, the bridal fabric textures are what give a dress its soul.
Modern Style: We look for ways to make traditional styles feel relevant—perhaps through a daring neckline, a hidden pocket, or a cleaner finish—ensuring our modern wedding dresses feel current without losing their soul.
Impeccable Engineering: Trends in aesthetics may change, but the trend for a perfect silhouette is permanent. Our commitment to British bridal craftsmanship ensures that the fit of a Castigliano gown is always its most striking feature."
Versatility: The Art of the Second Look
How can a bride personalize her look for different parts of her wedding day?
"We believe a bride’s look should be as dynamic as her wedding day. To achieve this, we have curated an extensive range of luxury bridal accessories designed to transform our core silhouettes. This allows a bride to move from a formal ceremony to a high-energy reception without a full outfit change—though the 'two-dress' trend is certainly one we embrace.
Transformative Details: We offer a wide variety of detachable bridal sleeves in various lengths and shapes, alongside detachable wedding dress trains. These additions allow you to adapt a simple, understated gown into a dramatic statement piece for the aisle.
The Knightsbridge Shrug Collection: Our Knightsbridge Atelier houses approximately 70 unique shrugs and jackets. These can be handcrafted in a diverse selection of laces to create a truly bespoke bridal look.
Interchangeable Separates: We have seen a significant rise in the popularity of bridal separates. Mixing and matching bodices and skirts allows for a highly personalized aesthetic that transitions beautifully throughout the event.
The Evening Change: A major trend right now is the 'second look.' Many of our brides choose a short wedding dress or a sleek reception gown for the evening, allowing them to dance the night away with ease and style."

A big trend right now is two dresses, a lot of brides like a short dress in the evening to dance the night away.
Timeless Style: Trends to Approach with Caution
Any trends you think brides should avoid or be wary of?
"I truly believe your gown should be an extension of your personality; it is an individual choice for everyone. My best advice is to wear a gown that makes you feel fabulous today, but also one that you will look back on in twenty years and still love.
However, there are a few technical 'trends' that can be difficult to execute with true elegance:
Plunging Necklines & Tulle Inserts: Be wary of necklines cut to the waist that rely on tulle inserts to hold the dress together. Often, these can detract from the clean lines of the design and lack the structural integrity required for a long day of celebration.
The Social Media 'Hype': Be cautious of the latest 'craze' you see on social media, such as oversized balloon sleeves. While they look striking in a styled photoshoot, they don't suit every silhouette. It is vital to ensure a trend works for your body and not just your Instagram feed.
Prioritize Longevity: Focus on a timeless wedding dress that highlights your natural beauty. If you love a trend, consider incorporating it through removable accessories rather than making it the permanent core of your gown."

The Castigliano Philosophy: Beyond the Gown
What’s the one thing you like to tell every client who walks through your doors?
"I tell every bride to walk towards the mirror and truly love the vision looking back at her. If you feel beautiful in the sample gown, you will be absolutely blown away by the final piece once it is handcrafted to your measurements.
I always offer these three pieces of advice to keep close to your heart:
Trust Your Intuition: Choose the gown that fulfills your dream, not the expectations of your friends or family. This is your moment to shine.
The Power of the Reveal: Think about the moment you walk down the aisle. How do you want your partner to see you in that split second before you become husband and wife? That image will stay with them forever.
The Castigliano Confidence: Our goal at the Knightsbridge boutique is to ensure that when you step into your gown, you aren't just wearing a dress—you are wearing a feeling of total, effortless confidence."

The Evolution of the Modern Bride
Finally, looking back over the last 35 years, what do you think has changed most in the bridal world?
"It is truly remarkable to see how much has changed since I first launched the brand. When I started, weddings were traditionally bound to religious settings or registry offices. Today, the world is the stage.
Brides are now celebrating in vineyards, on remote beaches, in historic castles, or at chic urban galleries. This shift has fundamentally changed the requirements of a designer wedding gown.
A bride marrying in a cathedral needs a different sense of drama and scale than a bride hosting a destination wedding on a beach. This evolution is why our collections are so diverse; we ensure that whether you need the grandeur of a classic ballgown or the effortless movement of a silk chiffon dress, the construction remains flawless. The venue may have changed, but the desire to feel like the most beautiful version of yourself remains the constant heart of every wedding."
